5.3. Syllabus

The course, Women's History in Modern and Contemporary Spain, will address the following topics:

• Session 1: Introduction to the course and presentation of the syllabus.
• Session 2: Women’s history, a way of writing history. Historiography and theoretical frameworks.
• Session 3: Enlightment, citizenship and the construction of femininity in the origins of Contemporary Era.
• Session 4: Feminism as social movement: objectives and strategies in the Spanish Contemporary History.
• Session 5: Between the private and the public: Women in 19th Century Spain. Politics, education and gender models.
• Session 6: Women at work, in the working-class culture and social protest.
• Session 7: Gender, anticlericalism and religion in the republican political culture.
• Session 8: Spanish women in the II Republic: between the suffrage and social mobilization.
• Session 9: The Spanish Civil War: an interpretation in gender perspective.
• Session 10: Women in anarchism and antifascism: the Republican political cultures at war.
• Session 11: The legacy of Franco's Regime for Spanish women.
• Session 12: Women in catholicism and falangism: proposal for a revision.
• Session 13: Daily life resistance, surviving and political compromise: Spanish women against Franco's Dictatorship.
• Session 14: Women’s participation in the Transition to Democracy (1975-1982).
• Session 15: Student presentations and discussions of readings and essays.
